How Old Is Your Piano? You will need 2 things to determine the age of your piano: 1. The brand name of the piano.

Haines Piano Company built a full line of upright pianos, baby grand pianos and player pianos, and their instruments were known for being of very good quality, and the firm was very successful. The Cable Piano Company claimed to be 'the world's greatest manufacturer of pianos, inner player pianos, and organs.' Cable built a factory in 1901 in St. Charles on 3.5 acres west of the Fox River.

Note: Some pianos will have more than one name for the manufacturer. For example: 'Hamilton' by Baldwin or 'Cable Nelson' by Everett. To make sure that you have all of the information you will need, open the lid of your piano and check out the name or names engraved or printed on the plate. Do NOT trust the name on the outside of the piano since in could have been refinished and a different name added. The serial number (NOT the model number) of the piano. To locate the serial number on a vertical piano, open the top and look inside.

Almost all of them include the serial number on the plate in a small 'window' near the tuning pins. The number will usually be a 4 to 7 digit number, but may include a letter or two. If you can't locate it here, look inside to the far left or far right as some manufacturers attach it there on a small piece of metal. It may be stamped in the wood under the lid, or as a last resort, pull the piano away from the wall and look on the back. To locate the serial number on a grand piano, take the music desk off. It's usually stamped on the pinblock here. Also look on the soundboard, many of the manufacturers will include it inside one of the 'windows' in the plate.

I have a Hobart M. Cable upright piano that I think is quite old. Does anyone know the value? Here are the details. Serial number is 142304 (I think). There is a seal on the inside of the lid that says: Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition 1909 Seattle. Gold Medal Hobart M.

Then, Manufactured by the Hobart M. Cable Company, La Port, Indiana. The condition is: finish shows signs of wear. One foot pedal is broken. Some of the ivory on the keys needs to be replaced and it is out of tune. Thanks for any help.

Cable upright piano that I think is quite old. The Achilles Heel of the old Hobart Cable uprights was the wooden upper bass bridge. Open the lid and look inside above and in back of the bass hammers.

If it has a wooden bridge, it's fairly likely that the bridge pins have begun to split the wood, allowing the bass strings to migrate to the right. Often this is severe enough of a problem that many of the bass hammers will be not be centered on the set of strings that they should be hitting, and will in fact hitting one of the strings of the set to the left. This is not what you would call the 'kiss of death.'

It's just a serious problem that often needs to be dealt with before the piano is made playable. In my area (Iowa) even good upright pianos with relatively few problems rarely bring over $100 or so. Therefore, a piano with this type of problem would be more likely than not to be offered free for the hauling. I have a Hobart M. Cable upright piano that I think is quite old. If you're looking to sell and someone offers you say $50 (or even less) take it. However, if you're thinking of keeping the piano and are looking for an assessment of its value as a usable instrument, my answer might be of a much more positive nature.
